Reactive Dog – FAQs
1. What does it mean if my dog is reactive?

Reactivity means your dog overreacts to everyday triggers like other dogs, people, traffic, or noises. It often shows as barking, lunging, growling, or shutting down. But this isn’t “bad behaviour” — it’s your dog saying, “I don’t feel safe.” At Dog Guru, we see reactivity as a call for healing, not correction.

2. Can reactivity in dogs really be fixed?

Yes — reactivity is not permanent. With the right approach, dogs can learn to feel safe, calm, and confident again. At Dog Guru, we don’t just teach “obedience.” We uncover and heal the root cause — fear, stress, or trauma so your dog’s behaviour changes from the inside out. That’s why our results last.

3. How is your method different from other dog trainers?

Most trainers try to suppress reactivity with corrections or distract dogs with treats. These are quick fixes that don’t last. Our “Calmness Leads to Reward” ® methodology is an emotionally intelligent, science based, positive, force free and treat-free dog training method that focusses on giving dog parents the tools, knowledge and understanding to guide their dog with connection, confidence, empathy and clarity.
We focus on trust, calm energy, and emotional alignment, so your dog no longer needs to be reactive.

4. What happens in the 121 Behavioural Consultation?

The 121 Consultation is your first step — and often a breakthrough moment. In the 90 minutes consultation at our ‘Dog Guru’ Clinic, Keith Mathews – The Dog Guru – will assess your dog, identify triggers, and create a clear action plan. You’ll also be shown practical techniques with your dog, so you leave with confidence and hope.

5. Will one consultation be enough, or will my dog need more?

Some dogs transform after just one 121 consultation, especially when followed by our 3-week ‘Done In 3’ Essentials Programme.
For dogs with deeper fears or aggression, we recommend our 6-Session Reactive Dog Transformation Programme. If you choose this route, the fee you paid for your 121 is automatically deducted — so your first step is always part of the journey.

6. My dog is aggressive — can you still help?

Yes. Aggression is usually just reactivity pushed to its limit. With 30+ years of experience and over 50,000 dogs helped, Keith Mathews ‘The Dog Guru’ specialises in rehabilitating even the most challenging cases.
Using his safe, gentle and proven methods, he has guided countless families from despair to peace.
